Here's something important to know: positive affirmations can help motivate you, but only if you already feel quite good about yourself.
A 2009 study found that people who already had good self-esteem felt better when they used positive affirmations in the present tense (like "I am confident"). But for people with low self-esteem, these same affirmations actually made them feel worse. The researchers discovered that people struggling with confidence felt better when they were allowed to think about whether the positive statements might not be entirely true, rather than just repeating them.
