Adam Mosseri, who runs Instagram, has said something pretty serious: we can't trust photos anymore. For years, pictures and videos were proof that something actually happened. They showed the truth in a way words couldn't. But now, with AI getting so good, that trust is gone. Mosseri isn't just talking about technology – he's saying we all need to change how we think about what we see online.
AI can now make fake photos and videos that look completely real. You could see a picture of a politician, a famous person, or even a disaster, and it might be totally made up by a computer in seconds. Some fake stuff is just a bit of fun, but some of it is dangerous. It can spread lies, wreck people's reputations, and fool entire communities. Mosseri said that while some AI content is rubbish that annoys people, other stuff is actually impressive. The trouble is, you can't tell which is which when you're scrolling through your feed.
This changes everything. For normal users, it means you can't trust what you see online anymore. A photo doesn't prove anything. A video isn't evidence. As Mosseri put it, "nothing is real by default anymore." That's a massive shift. It affects how we read the news, share stories, and even remember what happened.
Mosseri says platforms like Instagram need to step up. They should do more to label AI content and show what's real. One idea is something called cryptographic signing – basically putting a digital stamp on genuine photos and videos. But even with that, it's still really hard. Spotting AI content is tricky, and even Meta (Instagram's owner) admits they're struggling to keep up.
The message is clear: we all need to adapt. People need to be more suspicious and question what they see instead of just believing it. Platforms need to protect what's real, and governments might need to make new rules. Most importantly, we have to accept that we can't trust our eyes anymore.
Put simply, Mosseri is telling us to rethink how we look at photos. The internet has changed. Pictures and videos don't prove anything is real anymore. AI has made it impossible to tell fact from fiction, and we need to be careful, doubtful, and responsible in this new world.
