A Father’s Forgiveness:The Story of Richard and Tom
Richard was a hardworking dad who wanted the world for his only son, Tom. He’d spent his life saving every penny and pouring all his love into raising Tom, hoping he’d grow up to be honest, successful, and happy.
But as Tom hit his late teens, things started to go wrong. He fell in with the wrong crowd. Small acts of rebellion turned into a serious struggle with drug addiction. Despite Richard’s desperate pleas, Tom became angry and distant, eventually walking out the door at nineteen. Richard was heartbroken and felt like he’d failed as a father.
The Long Years of Silence
Years went by, and Tom sank further into his addiction. The only time Richard heard from him was when Tom needed money. Each time Richard helped, he felt a fresh sting of disappointment and betrayal. He started to feel a deep sense of resentment toward the son who had caused him so much grief.
One day, the phone rang again. But this time, Tom didn't ask for money. He sounded completely broken. He told Richard he was homeless, had lost everything, and didn't know where else to turn.
A Life-Changing Choice
Richard felt a massive internal struggle. A part of him wanted to hang up to protect his own heart from more pain. But the memories of the sweet little boy Tom used to be were stronger.
Richard decided to meet him. When they saw each other, they didn’t say a word—they just hugged, both of them feeling the heavy weight of the years they’d lost.
The Road Back
Richard brought Tom home and helped him through the long, difficult process of rehab and counselling. It wasn't a smooth ride; there were many setbacks. But Richard chose to let go of his anger and stood by his son through every dark moment.
By forgiving Tom, Richard didn’t just fix their relationship—he gave Tom the strength to save himself.
Years later, the two of them sat down for a quiet dinner, laughing and talking like they used to. Tom looked at his dad and said, "Thank you for not giving up on me." Richard, with tears in his eyes, simply replied, "Thank you for coming back."
The Lesson:
Forgiveness isn't just about letting someone else off the hook; it’s about healing your own heart. Letting go of resentment can be the very thing that gives someone else the strength to change their life.
