We Brits are known for keeping a stiff upper lip, but proper mental strength isn't about stuffing your feelings down or pretending everything's brilliant when it's clearly gone pear-shaped. It's more about building yourself up—the more you work at it, the better you get at dealing with whatever life throws at you.

Here are seven things mentally tough people do to keep their heads screwed on.

1. They don't sit around asking "Why's this happened to me?"

Life's a bit rubbish sometimes and you don't always get a fair shake. Mentally strong people don't spend forever moping about or feeling sorry for themselves. They accept that life can be unfair, dust themselves off, and get on with sorting out what to do next instead of stewing over the bad luck.

2. They don't try to keep everyone happy

It's easy to fall into the trap of saying "yes" to everything just to avoid rocking the boat, but that's a one-way ticket to knackering yourself out. Strong people know they can't be all things to all people.
