Forgiving a Father Who Rejected

This compelling story of forgiveness comes from a woman who shared her journey on the Authentic Adventure blog. Born into a family rejected by her father, she grew up with her mother and older brother, experiencing a childhood marked by absence and emotional pain.As a teenager, she felt cold, angry, and bitter, with a distorted view of love due to the divorces and abandonment she witnessed. When her father would occasionally try to reconnect, she would find excuses to avoid him, feeling he had lost his chance to be part of her life. However, a transformative moment occurred when she surrendered her life to Jesus during a Labor Day weekend. She felt an overwhelming sense of love and forgiveness, which prompted her to forgive her father. Her mother, sensing the change in her, encouraged her to reach out to her father. In a heartfelt phone call, she told her father that she forgave him. This act of forgiveness was met with tears and mutual apologies:"I cried. He cried. I can't say that instantly we began a relationship and everything was just peachy, but what I can say is that when I said those words, I literally felt bitterness, hatred, unforgiveness and so much more lift off my shoulders. I was instantly a different person."Over time, their relationship was fully restored. Her father became an integral part of her life, walking her down the aisle at her wedding and being present for the birth of her daughters. The forgiveness process allowed her to break down the walls she had built and to see her father not as the man who abandoned her, but as a forgiven individual.

Story illustrate that forgiveness is a journey that can lead to profound healing and reconciliation. It often requires a willingness to let go of past hurts and to see the humanity and vulnerability in those who have wronged us.
